selecting top ten urdu poets is not that easy,there are scores of urdu poets who are very popular,and it takes a lot of critic skills to rank them,however i've selected these ten poets as the best poets of urdu language,you can contradict.

Allama Iqbal
Muhammad Iqbal (November 9, 1877 – April 21, 1938), also known as Allama Iqbal is one of the greatest poet of all times.He is considered having inspired the Pakistan moment,he is also taken as "the nation poet of pakistan".One of the most important figure in urdu litratures and persian litrature as well.Also recongnised as "The poet of the East"

Meer Taqi Meer
Meer Taqi meer (September 1723 to 21 september 1810).His real name was "Meer Muhammad Taqi",his fathers name was "Meer Ali Taqi".One of the leading urdu poets of all times,he's got his own style of in ghazal,he is also know as "Khuda_e_sukhan".means the "God of poetry"."Deewan-e-meer" is the completion of his couplets which is available around the world in every well recongnized language,He's been praised by various other poets and litrature critics. Mirza Ghalib said about meer :

                ریختے کے تمہی استاد نہیں ہو غالب 
کہتے ہیں اگلے زمانے میں کوئی میر بھی تھا

Ibrahim zouq said:

 نہ ہوا پر نہ ہوا میر کا انداز نصیب
 ذوق یاروں نے بہت زور غزل میں مارا
Hasrat Mohani said:
 شعر میرے بھی ہیں پردرد و لیکن حسرت

Mirza ghalib
Ghalib (born on 27 December 1797 – died 15 February 1869).Real name " Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan". He used his pen name of Ghalib. Dabir-ul-Mulk, Najm-ud-Daula was his honorific. Today Ghalib remains popular not only in Pakistan and subcontinent but also amongst diaspora communities around the world.He's been widely sung by various singers. examples of kalam

Akbar Allahabadi
Akbar Allahabadi (November 16, 1846 – 15 February 1921).Real name Akbar Hussain Rizvi.One of the finest urdu poets of all times, Akbar is the pioneer in the field of humour and sarcasm,he's considered the biggest poet when it comes to sarcasm and the reformness of societry.

Momin Khan Momin
Momin Khan Momin (1800–1851),one of the greatests urdu language ever have.He various "ghazals" are included in the curriculms of pakistani schools,colleges and universities,"Deewan-e-Momin" is the name of the completion of his work. examples of kalam:

شب ہجر میں کیا ہجوم بلا ہے   
   زباں تھک گئ مرحبا کہتے کہتے

الجھا ہے پاءوں یار کا زلف دراز میں  
  لو آپ  اپنے دام میں صیاد آ گیا

جب کوئی دوسرا نہیں ہوتا
                

khawaja Meer Dard
Khwaja Mir Dard (born in 1721 and died in 1785).He's considered one of the greatest poets of all times in urdu ghazal,the pillar of classical urdu ghazal.He is considered to be the greatest poet in urdu poetry with a lot of sufi couplets and the ghazals and "shers" saying "sufi thoughts".

ہم تو اس جينے کے ہاتھوں مر چلے

روندے ہے نقش پا کي طرح خلق ياں مجھے

Haider Ali Aatish
Khwaja Haider Ali Aatish (1778–1848),Great urdu poet,mostly read around the world,very well known in subcontinent and pakistan.

آئے بھی لوگ، بیٹھے بھی، اٹھ بھی کھڑے ہوئے
میں جا ہی ڈھونڈھتا تیری محفل میں رہ گیا    
                                                  
فصل بہار آئ، پیو صوفیو شراب

Daag dehlvi
daagh dehlvi (1831–1905).Real name Nawab Mirza Khan,A great urdu poet,used the "daagh" as takhlus.Daagh started writing poetry at the age of ten.

يہاں بھي تو وہاں بھي تو زميں تيري فلک تيرا
کہيں ہم نے پتہ پايا نہ ہر گز آج تک تيرا

جو تجھ کو پايا تو کچھ نہ پايا، يہ خاکداں ہم نے خاک پايا
جو تجھ کو ديکھا تو کچھ نہ ديکھا ، تما م عالم خراب ديکھا

کعبے کي سمت جا کے مرا دھيان پھر گيا
اس بت کو ديکھتے ہي بس ايمان پھر گيا

محشر میں داد خواہ جو اے دل نہ تو ہوا
تو جان لے يہ باتھ سے ميرا پھر گيا
                

Bahadur Shah Zafar
Mirza Abu Zafar Sirajuddin Muhammad Bahadur Shah Zafar better known as "Bahadur shah zafar"(24 October 1775 – 7 November 1862,he was the last mughal Emperor,When muslims were deceived by English,and English army arrested him,he had to suffer a lot,he was teased badly in Rangon in the hands of English,the reflection of his griefs can be seen in his poetry,like look at "shers" below

لگتا نہیں ہے جی مرا اُجڑے دیار میں
کس کی بنی ہے عالمِ ناپائدار میں

بُلبُل کو باغباں سے نہ صَیَّاد سے گلہ
قسمت میں قید لکّھی تھی فصلِ بہار میں

یا مجھے افسرِ شاہانہ بنایا ہوتا
یا مرا تاج گدایانہ بنایا ہوتا

اپنا دیوانہ بنایا مجھے ہوتا تُو نے 
کیوں خرد مند بنایا، نہ بنایا ہوتا
                

Ameer minai
Ameer Minai (born in 1826 died in 1900),a very well known urdu poet,"meenai-e-sukhan" is the name of his deewan (completion of work).He used "Ameer" as his takhalus. examples of poetry:

مے پئیں کیا کہ کچھ فضا ہی نہیں
ساقیا باغ میں گھٹا ہی نہیں

یہ چرچے، یہ صحبت، یہ عالم کہاں
خدا جانے ، کل تم کہاں، ہم کہاں

وہ کون تھا جو خرابات میں خراب نہ تھا 
ہم آج پیر ہوئے کیا کبھی شباب نہ تھا
